I’m not a doctor or an addiction medicine specialist, but I am a genuine guy who successfully avoided getting into trouble with weed. If you have the dough to fork over to a private hospital and your cannabis has such a hold on your life that you need outside intervention in a controlled environment, then rehab is the place for you. For the rest of us, we have other, more accessible, modes of quitting weed.
Psychotherapy (talk therapy)
Speak to a psychiatrist, psychologist, or licensed clinical social worker as a way of dealing with dependence and its underlying issues. However, like rehab, this can turn into a significant financial commitment and some doctors will prove to be anti-cannabis, which is problematic in itself. Bring them all your life’s problems and doctors, the good ones at least, will help you discover your own solutions. Maybe this is a good avenue if you’re not even sure if pot is your real problem.
Narcotics Anonymous has lots of information on cannabis, and they offer a strategy and support system that has proven beneficial for some people. They operate pretty much the same way as every other 12-step program, which is they encourage full participation and the adoption of a “clean and sober” sponsor. Not all programs integrate religion in a specific way, but all encourage their participants to find a Higher Being to look up to. The Twelve Step approach a 5-10% success rate and many critics fear that it is outdated and does not apply to the rules of the average 21st Century life.
So, you can see which road I’d take right away if I had to go through this whole ordeal over again. The simplest answer is often the right one. And think about it this way, if you find it doesn’t work you’re only on the hook for the cost of a book.
